Victim Advocate

PROGRAM TITLE: Rape Recovery Team, Victim Advocacy for Sexual Assault Survivors

WORK EXPERIENCE/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
BA or BS in Social Work, Counseling, Nursing, Psychology or related field, or equivalent experience required. Two years experience in direct service preferred. Experience in sexual assault or domestic violence programs a plus.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Advocate is responsible for providing crisis intervention, advocacy, emotional support, and case management to sexual assault victims and their loved ones at any stage of their recovery process. For victims who report the assault to law enforcement, the Advocate will make every effort to simplify the process for them by informing them of their rights and options, advising them regularly of the status of their case, and accompanying them throughout criminal and administrative proceedings. For victims who choose not to report to law enforcement, the Advocate will provide any other needed information, referrals, advocacy and services. Collaborate with other community agencies to ensure that victims receive the most comprehensive crisis intervention services available. Assist with implementing plans for program development.

PRINCIPLE JOB DUTIES:

  1. Provide on-call crisis intervention with adult and adolescent sexual assault victims, and their loved ones.
  2. Provide victim advocacy, case management, emotional support, outreach services, and online support services to teens and adults.
  3. Provide victims information regarding their rights and options.
  4. Accompany victims throughout criminal and administrative proceedings.
  5. Carry a pager and be on-call during shift; participate in 24/7 pager rotations.
  6. Provide information and assistance, as needed, regarding Victim’s Compensation.
  7. Advise victims regularly of the status of their case.
  8. Work collaboratively with all community agencies involved in the client’s recovery process.
  9. Document services and prepare reports as needed.
  10. Assist with administering client satisfaction surveys that are used to evaluate program.
  11. Provide monthly statistical reports, to Rape Recovery Team Director by assigned date. Assist with gathering necessary information for quarterly reports.
  12. Participate in training on-call advocates and evaluating their performance in a crisis response.
  13. Assist with training and supervision of volunteers involved in the Promote Truth website for teen sexual violence victims.
  14. Participate in performing tasks necessary to achieve program goals, and complete tasks by assigned date.
  15. Participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  16. Participate in making presentations about Rape Recovery Team services to medical staff, social service agencies, criminal justice system, and other community organizations.
  17. Attend and participate regularly in team meetings, supervision meetings, “all-staff” meetings, and retreats.
  18. Attend and participate in workshops, conference and other trainings as requested.
  19. Assume all other duties as assigned by the Rape Recovery Team Director.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Position requires expertise in establishing a counseling relationship within a crisis environment. Position also requires an independent, self-motivated individual with effective communication skills. Ability to remain calm, rational and manage multiple priorities in a crisis intervention environment. Individual must possess familiarity with the criminal justice system, government and nonprofit agencies as they relate to the issues of sexual assault. In addition, position requires awareness of feminism and sensitivity to the societal issues of violence against women and children.

INTERNAL CONTACTS:
Internal contacts include Agency staff members, volunteers and clients.

EXTERNAL CONTACTS:
External contacts include hospital staff, as well as representatives of law enforcement, the criminal justice system, Office of Victim Services, and other agencies.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work location is clean and fully climate controlled. The working hours must be flexible to attend to emergency situations, meetings, and speaking engagements. Must be able to drive and have use of an automobile for local travel.

This is a full time position.
Salary: $13.00-$13.50 per hour.
